Our History
Court Street Village Non-Profit Housing Corporation (CSVNP) was organized in 1986 by a small group of Court Street United Methodist Church (CSUMC) members to provide housing for persons with low or moderate income in Flint, Michigan. In 1989, CSVNP received approval as a 501c)3 non-profit corporation.
The CSUMC purchased 12.5 acres of property on Court Street near Lapeer Road. It was originally intended to construct a new church building. However, they decided to use that land to construct two senior apartment buildings and refurbish their original church.
CSVNP was the first organization in Michigan to use low income tax credits to construct low income housing. The apartments are comprised of an east and west building. 800 East Court Street opened in 1990 and has 150 units for seniors 55 and older. It offers affordable rent on one and two bedroom apartments. 700 West Court Street opened in 1993, with 106 units for seniors. It was open to all income levels- low, moderate, and market rate. Both apartment buildings were sold in 2011 to a local charitable foundation.
Two blocks from the senior campus, with the help of Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), Avon Park was developed in 1995. It features 56 townhouses. Avon Park offers affordable two and three bedroom units with attached garages for all income levels. Avon Park reverted to MSHDA in 2013.
In 1994, CSVNP began a neighborhood support program with four surrounding neighborhood groups closest to downtown Flint. With the generous support of a local foundation, CSVNP moved it's operations into a Tudor style house in the Central Park neighborhood in 1995. With the assistance of a local grant from the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) AmeriCorps program, CSVNP hired a program director to assist the neighborhoods. CSVNP currently supports and acts as fiduciary for two downtown Flint neighborhoods; Fairfield Village and Central Park.
CSVNP focuses it's attention on assisting the two neighborhoods in an effort to improve neighborhood conditions and improve the quality of life of the residents. We work to fulfill our mission to 'help neighborhoods establish a sense of purpose, pride and place'.
After 27 years, CSVNP decided to move operations back to where it all began in 1986; Court Street United Methodist Church. We moved locations in August, 2020 and currently operate in the annex of the church, located at 215 W. Court Street Flint, MI 48502.
